Return of Persephone
According to Greek mythology, Persephone (Proserpina to the Romans) was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter and wife of Hades, ruler of the Underworld. Hades had seized Persephone but was persuaded to let her return to earth each year for six months (the time varies according to the version of the legend). This painting by Lord Frederic Leighton in 1891 is housed in the Leeds, England, Art Gallery. It shows the messenger god Hermes bringing Persephone back to earth and being greeted by her mother.
