Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the common filamentous fungus Acremonium sclerotigenum (formerly Cephalosporium sclerotigenum). Acremonium sclerotigenum hyphae are fine and hyaline and produce mostly simple conidiophores call phialides (one phialide is seen here along the left border). Acremonium species are usually slow growing and are initially compact and moist mycelia. Asexual reproduction is by conidiophores that produce conidia (phialoconidia or ameroconidia). Species of this mould exist as saprophytes in a wide variety of habitats or as plant and animal pathogens. Some species of Acremonium have been reported to be allergenic while some are known to produce mycotoxins. Acremonium has been reported to cause pulmonary infections and infections of the cornea and nails in individuals with weak immune systems.
