Beside giving a picture, however dimmed by distance, of the highest mountainrange in the world, this panorama permits the mountaineer to compare the general outline andfeatures of the eastern Himalaya with those of the Karakoram. The Himalaya. 7 Further to the west, in the corner between Nepaul, Kashmir andTibet, lies the Himalaya of Kumaun and Gahrwal. This importantgroup is easy of access from the plain, and not far from good base-stationsfor supphes. Hence its pleasant and well-wooded valleys are frequentlysought out by travellers and mountaineers. It is said that the nameHimalaya, or Himaleh, abode of the snow, or abode of winter,. Aroundthe twin peaks of Nanda Devi, which are between 25,000 and 26,000 feet,cluster lower peaks, upon one of which. Mount Kamet, the brothersH. and R. Schlagintweit reached a height of 22,260 feet in the jj^ 1383 ?\Y \y Graham made several ascents in this group,reaching 23,185 feet on Dunagiri^ ; and in 1907 Dr. T. G.
