Louis doClercq employs the term kirub (written phonetically ki-ru-hu) where shedu or the corresponding idiographicgroup is found elsewhere (Les origines de Ihistoire, , Eng. tr., p. 126). In the same connection, the French - < SEAL WITH TlIK i:XGKAVIX(; which Leiionnaut has compared with Ezekiels visiou of cherubim bearing the throuc of nt ~N ^?^.r-iM! THE CHERUBIM 79 savant drew attention to the scene engraved on a cylin-der seal, in which he saw the counterpart of the imageryof Ezekiels vision. The prophet beheld four livingcreatures or cherubim which, in Lenormants opinion,were ananged two and two, back to back, and went eachone straight forward toward the four quarters. Overtheir heads and borne by them was a crystal pavement;and above the pavement the likeness of a throne, as theappearance of a sapphire stone, and upon the throne thelikeness as of a man enveloped in shining light. It wasthe appearance of the likeness of the glory of God. Onthe cylinder seal referred to is depicted a marvellous boatterminating at each end in a human half-figure.
