The situation where it is proposed to build this cottage, isabout a mile from a country town, and the area of surfacefor the whole purpose is about an acre and a fourth. Thislot of ground is bounded by a street both in the front andrear. The entrance is at a ; the dwelling at b; the stable atc. One half of the whole surface, viz. that portion representedby right lined plots in the rear of the house, is devoted to agarden for fruits and vegetables, and the whole remainingportion, comprising the space in front and at the sides of thehouse, is laid out as a lawn, shrubbery, and flower garden,in the picturesque manner. The carriage road, leading tothe front door and to the stable, is shown at d; e, designatesirregular beds cut in the turf, and stocked with annuals andperennial flowers; j\ a thick shrubbery belt, composed ofsyringos, mountain ashes, and lilacs, interspersed with thebalsam fir, and arbor vitee, to give a
