Crown or-rind grafting is useful late in the season for putting new heads on old trees (the wood should he cut the previous autumn). As to times of grafting they may fol- low one another, thus: Castania, ulmus, cornus, tilia, pyrus, prunus. malus, quercus and alnus. Referring to the autumn cut scions. these should be tied in bundles with 4-foot labels and buried upside down to prevent breaking the eyes out when lifting. Medium-sized shoots are best. Grafting lifted stock makes employ- ment during bad weather in winter. Stocks can be bought very cheaply by the thousand, and if grafted before planting are a year ahead of those planted out and budded in summer. If laid in trays after grafting and dip- ping they can be heeled in again for spring planting. Grafting under glass is quite an industry, conifers, rhodo- dendrons, roses, clematises and others being largely handled.
