An early printed portrait photograph of French writer Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898) in his sitting room in Rue de Rome. His major French symbolist poems and other works anticipated and inspired a number of revolutionary artistic schools of the early 20th century, including Dadaism,Cubism, Futurism, and Surrealism. His real name was Étienne Mallarmé, Many consider his works are the most difficult to translate into English because of his use of phonetic ambiguities that only occur in French.
