William, his second son, became a Baptistclergyman, and traveled widely m the HolyLand, remaining there for a number of years. George Mathiot, William Page and Tim-othy Hawkins, purchased lots from Mr. Con-nell in 1802, and settled there about thatdate. Mr. Mathiot pursued the same occu-pation as the father of John Milton; that is,he was a scrivener; and also a justice of thepeace. He was influential and conspicuousin the Methodist church. He reared a largefamily, some of whom became prominent inPennsylvania, and one attained political dis-tinction in the west. All of them seem tohave been active and progressive men. Abra-ham Baldwin, a New Englander, came toConnellsville about 1806. He was active andconspicuous in church, business and politics,and produced the first carding machines evermanufactured in that section of country. William Davidson came into Connellsvillein 1808. He was a native of Carlisle, Penn-sylvania. He was merchant, farmer and iron-master, had served in the second war withEngland and was captured when the surren-der of Hull took place at Detroit.
