This 'Dalitz plot' from the Crystal Barrel experiment at CERN, the particle physics laboratory near Geneva, shows a resonance (red spot at top) that could be a glueball - a particle formed from gluons bound together. Each point on the graph corresponds to neutral pions produced from proton-antiproton annihilations on CERN's Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) accelerator. The red spots (locations with most events) show short-lived particle states known as resonances. The red spot at top is the possible glueball. Gluons are the carrier particles of the strong nuclear force, and in theory can bind together without quarks.
