The weapon was a inch (450 mm) rifled muzzle-loading (RML) gun. It was designed by George William Armstrong (first Baron Armstrong, 1810 –1900), an English engineer and industrialist who founded the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing concern on Tyneside. The guns were made by Elswick Ordnance Company, the armaments division of the British manufacturing company Armstrong Whitworth. Some of the 15 guns made were used in Malta and Gibraltar
