TRADE-SCHOOL COURSE APPLIED MATHEMATICS This course is designed to give each student special training anddrill in the application of the fundamental processes of mathematics to theproblems occurring in his chosen trade. Care is used to select a widevariety of exercises so as to test thoroughly the students grasp of basicprinciples. The classes are divided into small groups, enabling the in-structor fully to understand the individual needs of each student, andthe course is so flexible as to make it possible at any time for him togive such work as will strengthen any weaknesses he may discover. Wedo not aim to minimize the value of abstract mathematics, but ratherto emphasize this value by a constant application of mathematical princi-ples to the everyday experiences of the student in his STUDENTS LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS OF CLARKE HALL BUSINESS TRAININGThis course embraces the study of simple contracts, commonmercantile terms and usages, banks and banking, building and loanassociations, partnerships, fire and life insurance, real estate transactions,mechanics liens, rights and duties of employee and employer, andsimple accounts. Practice is required in the drafting of business andlegal forms in ordinary use. BLACKSMITHING This department is equipped with thirty power-blast forges with afull equipment of tools at each forge. After covering the course ofpractice pieces and becoming familiar with the uses of the blacksmithstools, the student takes up practical work, of which there is a greatvariety, such as ironing off wagons, making tools, general forge andrepair work, and horseshoeing.
