Colonel: I have the honor to report that in pursuance oforders I moved my command in position on the right of the Sev-enteenth Army Corps, which was the extreme right of the army inthe field, on the night and morning of the 27th and 28th instant,and during my advance to a more desirable position we were metby the rebel infantry from Hoods and Lees corps, who made adesperate and determined attack at half-past eleven oclock in themorning of the n u THE GEORGIA CAMPAIGN. 481 My lines were protected only by logs and rails hastily thrownin front of them. The first onset was received and checked, andthe battle commenced, lasting until about three oclock in theafternoon. During that time six successive charges were made,which were six times gallantly repulsed, each time with fearfulloss to the enemy. Later in the evening, my lines were severaltimes assaulted vigorously, but terminated with like result. Themost of the fighting occurred on Generals Harrow and Smithsfronts, which formed the centre and right of the line. Thetroops could not have displayed more courage, nor greater deter-mination not to yield. Had they shown less they would havebeen driven from their position.
