Matthew andMark comes next in date: it is of the nthcentury, bound in exceedingly thick boards, covered with brown leather, and ornamentedon the obverse side by an ivory carvingvariously assigned to the 9th, 10th, and nthcenturies. The ivory panel is framed in aborder of gilt brass, whereon are engravedrepresentations of our Lord seated upon rainbow, supported by twoangels, the four evangelists, an angel, a royal personage receiving abook, and an ecclesiastic, in the act of benediction, each figure beingplaced under a semicircular arched canopy. Two metal clasps (onelost) revolved on large headed pins fastened to the fore edge of thelower cover, and were secured by a similar projecting pin on theupper cover. A small iron ring, attached to the binding by a thongof leather, shows that the precious volume was intended to bechained to a desk. The outer metal rim appears to be of laterworkmanship than the engraved border. 61.
