Last smoke pours out of Redcar steelworks coke ovens as they are shut down safely following the closure of the historic works.

Tuesday 13th October 2015, Redcar, north east England, United Kingdom. On Monday 12th October 2015, the Official Receiver, Ken Beasley, said: “SSI was placed into liquidation with substantial debts and had no funds available to purchase the coal needed to keep the coking ovens operational. I have ensured the continued operation of the ovens whilst I dealt with health and safety issues and considered whether there were any viable offers for the ovens. There is no realistic prospect of a buyer being found and the priority now is to close the ovens down safely. PICTURED: Tuesday 13th October 2015: Stockpiles of Coke near Coke ovens as ovens still burn during shutdown process. The ovens need to burn constantly, and be fed with coal to produce coke. The coke produced at Redcar was used primarily to feed the blast furnace at SSI - but since the company’s liquidation, it has been stockpiled and likely to be sold by the receiver.
