F. Betts, who was present during the opera-tion. The vagina being thoroughly cleansed an incision nearly threeinches was made, starting just back of the urethra. An examina-tion through the wound revealed the stone firmly fixed by its pos-terior portion to the fundus of the bladder. As the finger could notbe used, a cross incision about one and one-half inches was made, and a thick short-ribbed sound was passed over the stone withthe point kept closely against it; the adhesions were broken off,and at the same time the stone was rotated into the vagina, and then. Calculus about two-thirds of Natural Size, from Photograph. delivered b}T the large stone forceps through the vulva. Some forcewas required to extract it. The bleeding from the surface dissectedfrom the stone was quite free, but easily controlled by hot waterirrigation. The wound was then partially closed, the transverse in-cision closed entire, the posterior and extreme anterior ends of thelong incision each receiving a stitch, thus leaving a large openingfor drainage and probable fistula, which will require an operation inthe future. The vagina was lightly packed with iodoform gauze, and cotton was placed against the vulva; frequent douches of barytawater was ordered. The evening after the operation marked thehighest temperature, °. After twenty-four hours the vaginaltampon was dispensed with, cotton being kept against the vulva andchanged frequently. A^agiual douches were given three or four timesa day. The patient was allowed to get up on the fifth da
