Because of it's south facing situation Micklegate Bar was the entrance used by travellers from London making it effectively the main entrance to the city. Because of this status executions. stocks and the displaying of executed severed heads were all carried out in the vacinity around Micklegate Bar reflecting it macabre past. Modern traffic going in or out of this part of York still used the original archways.
