He wasserved heir to his grand-father Alexander Ruth-ven of Freeland 16 Decem-ber 1609, and to his fatheron the same day, and on10 March 1610.^ He hadconfirmation of a charter,dated 24 October 1608,by Sir James Forrester of Garden to his father WilliamRuthven of the lands of Kirktoun of Mailer, on 21 Decem-ber 1609.^ He was knighted by King Charles i. at Dal-keith 12 July 1633, was a Commissioner for the Treatyof Ripon 1641, and sat in Parliament for Perthshire1639-41, 1645-46, and 1649-50. In 1642 he was on a Com-mission directed against Jesuits and others,* and appears inApril 1643 as having lent £1200 for the maintenance of theScottish Army in Ireland.^ He was colonel of one of theregiments sent against the Marquess of Huntly in 1644,and was afterwards on several Committees of the Estates,1646-47.
