Graue Grist Mill was established by the Graue family who were forced to leave their home in northern Germany since they were Protestants in a largely Catholic area. The mill took 7 years to build. Its prime use for grinding of serials to make flour. In winter they produced ice. They also had a small general store. During the slave trade era the mill was one of several safe houses for slaves fleeing north to Canada part of a network named the Underground Railroad
