Cervical spine immobilisation, illustration. Patient with their head and neck immobilised following a head or neck injury, along with being strapped to a back board. This prevents further movements of the spine, particularly the cervical (neck) section, as this could cause further damage. This immobilisation can be vital to prevent paralysis or death, and to allow the patient to be moved safely. The patient is also being given oxygen and pain-relief through a gas mask.
