Praying woman. Detail of fragmentary 1400s fresco, attributed to Renaissance artist Stefano d’Antonio di Vanni (c. 1405-1483). In the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino (Church of Saint Augustine) in Volterra, Tuscany, Italy. Stefano d’Antonio di Vanni was a pupil of Florentine painter and sculptor Bicci di Lorenzo (1373-1452).

Volterra, Tuscany, Italy: this praying young woman is a detail of a Renaissance fresco preserved in the 13th Century Chiesa di Sant’Agostino (Church of Saint Augustine) in Piazza XX Settembre. Although the church of the Augustinian Friars is still consecrated, it now hosts the Museo Diocesano d’Arte Sacra (Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art). The collection, previously housed in part of the bishop’s palace, combines medieval and later Christian artworks from Volterra Cathedral with art from other parish churches in the city and works from parishes throughout the wider Diocese.
