Somewere for keeping up the old custom, andkilling him, but others argued that the manhad not landed of his own free will, andthat he ought not to be liable to the usualpenalty, even though salt water was in hiseye — this being the mark of a shipwreck. After a vast amount of discussion theyagreed to a compromise, put him into acanoe, gave him a quantity of bananas andcocoa-nuts, and sent him out to sea. Theman contrived to slip on shore again with-out being seen, and, after hiding in cavesfor some days, he succeeded in getting onboard a whaler that was passing near theisland. The appearance of the natives as they werebefore the missionaries came to them wasanything but prepossessing.
