Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). The red imported fire ant, S. invicta was likely imported into the US from South America. Fire ants live and do most of their foraging for food through underground tunnels. They can cause nasty bites in humans and kill other prey such as other invertebrates, young birds, small mammals, and reptiles. They reduce biomass, abundance, and diversity of other organisms. They first bite with their mandibles and then sting with and abdominal stinger. Magnification: x12 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
