The latter is distinct in having large flat heads, with outer leaves of a rich dark green, instead of the light gray or bluish cast of most varieties. Our strains of these varieties are grown especially for critical trade, and the heads are inspected carefully by us as they develop in the field. I hus we know that they are true to type, and of tlie most solid-heading character. Danish Ballhead,^!!/-^/ introduced by us. is now grown extensively, as it is not only remarkably sure in heading, but also an excellent keeper,—the hard, round heads coming out in the spring in even finer condition than when stored away. The Ballhead is extremely hardy and gives excellent results in cool localities and unfa\ orable seasons,—see page 27. Burpee's Short-Stem is one of the finest hard-heading strains ; the heads are of good size and grow uniformly on very short stems, so that they appear to be resting on the soil, and the number of loose outer leaves is few in comparison with most other late kinds ; for this reason they can be grown quite closely together. 's Brunswick, offered on page 24, is also a very fine short-stemmed Drumhead Cabbage for autumn and winter use. The Filderkraut is a distinct type, of tall conical shape, the leaves at the top rolling tightly to form a slender point, as in the Winnigstadt, perfection drumhead savoy cabbage. only much taller; the heads are about six inches in diam- eter.
