During the golden age of Arab Science the Arabs developed and refined the distillation process. Around 1000 AD Avicenna (Ibn Sina) described the distillation of rose oil (rose water) from rose petals. The apparatus shown at (1) is based on a 13th century drawing of a distillation plant in Damascus consisting of multiple units for producing rose water. Rose water was used for medicinal purposes as well as a perfume. Damascus was a centre for the production of luxury goods which were widely exported.
