The principal fea-ture of this truck is the flattening of theflanges of the arch bar channels over thejournal boxes. The engravings show abuilt-up truck bolster, but the latest de-sign employs a cast steel bolster ot thesame general form. The top arch baris a 5-in. 1Mb. channel, and the tensionmember is an 11%-lb. channel. The steelend casting combines the spring fulcruma and arch-bar col-umns in a single casting. December, 1902. In a locomotive with ordinary extension front end the cin-ders accumulate very rapidly until a certain amount hasbeen caught, and then the rest pass out and the front endbecomes self-cleaning. Mr. Frank Slater, of the Chicago &Northwestern Railway, in a paper read before the WesternRailway Club, November meeting, illustrated two methods ofarranging the extension front end to make it strongly recommended such practice. In the discussion Mr. J. Snowden Bell made some plain andforcible statements with reference to the long smokebox whichshould be carefully considered. He said, in part: The absolute fallacy of the spark-retaining theory, uponwhich the claims of advantage of the extension front arechiefly based, has been so long ago and so fully demonstratedin railroad service that it is difficult to understand how any-thing other than prejudice
