Weshall see that in many patients these alterations invision are overlooked because they are not associatedwith persistent subjective disorders. 678 WOUNDS OF THE OCCIPITAL LOBE 679 Anatomy and Physiology In many cases wounds of the occipital lobe are notaccompanied by any appreciable symptoms. Theoccurrence and character of the visual disorders areclosely related to the anatomy of this part of the brain, which is briefly described in the following paragraphsgiving the anatomical and physiological data necessaryfor a clear Fig. 17.—The area striata according to Brodmann. Internal surface of the , , Lingual lobe. External aspect of the ^, 0^ 0, occipital ^, T^, T^ temporal O. F., parieto-occipital 0. S., parieto-occipital sulcus. The extent of the area striata round the calcarine fissure is shown bythe dotted area. Anatomy.—The occipital lobe in shape somewhatresembles a pyramid ; the base is in front, and isjoined on to the rest of the hemisphere ; the summit isthe posterior extremity of the lobe, or occipital pole, and lies beneath the upper and outer part of theinternal occipital protuberance. The external aspectcorresponds to the concavity of the occipital bone, 680 WOUNDS OF THE BRAIN and is made up of three convolutions (the first, second, and third occipital) placed horizontally, and convergingtowards the point of the lobe. The inferior aspectis slightly concave, and inclined downward
