Now therailroad companies have applied to thecourts to overrule the city ordinances, andpermit them to resume the dangerousspeed. Improved Die for Pipe=ThreadingMachine. Our illustration shows the die head of aPeerless pipe threader, made by the Bg-nall &Keeler Mfg. Co., of St. Louis, Mo. This die is the neatest, easiest operatedone we have yet seen for cutting pipethreads, practically duplicates of eachother. The body of the die, the frame, hasaround its center heavy slots carrying thecutters ; over these fits a cam ring, havinga slot for each cutter and holding theircutting ends rigidly at a given distancefrom the center. Revolving the ring in one direction. An Ashpan Sprinkler. We have received from Mr. R. G. Ram-say, Davenport, la., sketch and descrip-tion of an ashpan sprinkler used for wet-ting down the ashes in the pans. He hadput the device on some engines belongingto the Great Northern and found it highlysatisfactory. He writes: Its uses are, first, to prevent the raising of fire alongthe track and on bridges ; second, to keepthe ashpan cool and prevent the heatingof driving boxes, also to prevent the pansfrom warping out of shape with the heat;third, to prevent the ashes from flying onthe machinery, saving one-half of thewiping and helping the fireman to keep amuch cleaner engine. Sprinkler con-sists of a pipe along each side of thepan and connected to the injectorbranch pipe, and is controlled by theengineer. I used a in -inch pipe andput in three rows of holes, and theyare put in the pipe in such a way that opens the dies and in another closest
