Carfax Tower, the last remaining part of a 12th century medieval church. stands at the centre of Oxford, at the junction of George Street, the High Street, Queens Street and St Aldates. This quaint clock is a rather later addition. It chimes the quarter hours on a pair of bells cast by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough in 1898. The Latin inscription, 'Fortis est Veritas' means - 'the truth is strong'. It is the motto on Oxford's coat of arms.
