During the year 1782 a number of battles among the Indians andfrontiersmen occurred, and between the Moravian Indians and the Wyan-dots. In these, horrible acts of cruelty were practised on the captives,many of such dark deeds transpiring under the leadership of the notorious 56 THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY. frontier outlaw, Simon Girty, whose name, as well as those of his brothers,was a terror to women and children. These occurred chiefly in the Ohiovalleys.
