Guido Tonelli (born 1950) is an Italian physicist who is one of the leaders of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) project. The CMS is one of the two main detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Experiments using the CMS to discover the Higgs boson led to the announcement of the discovery of a Higgs-like particle in 2012. Tonelli and other CERN physicists have received awards in recognition of this work, including the Fundamental Physics Prize in 2012. The same year, Tonelli was also made a Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Photographed in 2012.
