On Trinidad, the percent female V. brugersi with mature spermatheca is the lowest among nine species of fiddler crabs. Per capita frequency of reproduction is inversely correlated with terrestriality. Since U. subcylindrica is even more terrestrial than U. burgersi (Thurman, in press), it is not surprising that similar reproductive capabilities have evolved. The low fecundity and frequency of egg-production as well as large ova are parallel adaptations in the two ecologically similar species (Table II)..
