The mostcareful examination of the shore discovered not theslightest trace of Verhoeff. Reaching the head ofthe bay, and communicating with Gibson, who hadcome down the side of the glacier, I found that thenatives had discovered traces of the missing man,— 414 Northward over the Great Ice footprints along the side of the glacier. Picking theseup, we immediately followed them up on to the glacieritself, and for a little distance on its surface
