Recently tests were made on one of these breakers byshort-circuiting a 25,000-kva., 23,000-volt turbo-genera-tor, five tests being made without external reactance inthe circuit, five tests with 5 per cent 500-amp. reactancecoils and six tests by short-circuiting the line at a sub-station 8 miles distant, the circuit including about 3miles of cable. The Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation, in conjunction withthe Waterloo and the Bardsley Parish Councils, recentlytook the first definite step towards acquiring the tramwaysystem of the Oldham, Ashton & Hyde Electric Tramways,operated under private management for about twenty-fiveyears. The Ashton Council decided to promote in the nextsession of Parliament a bill to make provision in respectto the purchase of the undertaking. Agreements werealso confirmed with the Parish Councils of Waterloo andBardsley for the transfer of their powers to the Corpora-tion. The bill seeks to authorize the Corporation to con-struct additional tramways in the borough and to provideand run omnibuses. In the event of the bill being passed,it is. hoped to establish through inter-running between Ash-ton a
