Carnations are doing well this week, just the opposite of most other items. Apparently the growers are shipping no more than is necessary, in anticipation of the special demand for Mothers' day, which will come in the latter days of the week. It is assured that all strictly first-class carnations will sell at fair prices, irrespective of color, but it is too much to expect that overripe stock will find a market—no one would insult his mother by using that kind of stuff. Butterfly sweet peas have arrived in a flood this week; the receipts are sev- eral times what they were in the week preceding. The quality is extremely fine and the stock is selling fully as well as anything else on the list. The winter-flowering varieties are passing out; they cannot be sold in competitio^rv with the Butterfly peas, even at consid-^ erably smaller prices. ?'here continue to be moderate quan- tities of bulbous stock, but the demand has subsided; evidently the public does not fancy bulbous flowers after Easter. The first peonies arrived this week, and from now on this flower is likely to dominate the market to a greater or less extent. Valley is easier than it was, and or- chids have come in so much more heav- ily that prices have dropped off prac- tically one-third. The leading cattleya growers state thatV there will be big cuts
