The canes arc preserved uprightby means of poles, from the tops of which stretch thick bamboorods or cords, against which the slips incline. To keep outvermin of various kinds, the brakes are inclosed by fences ofmatting from two to three feet high. This acts as a strongprotection against land crabs, pests which, when once admittedinto a sugar plantation, prove very destructive. Like the ricecrops, the sugar crops are two annually.
