His fatherand mother were both born in Coventry, in 1801 2o8 MEN OF PROGRESS. and 1804 respectively ; the former died in 1887 andthe latter in 1895. He is a grandson of Josephand Sabria (Knight) Read and of Sheffield andRebecca (Andrews) Wait, and is a descendant inthe sixth generation of John Read, who was born inLincolnshire, England, in 1598. His father was afarmer, and Byron followed that caUing until he be-came of age, his education meanwhile being such ascould be obtained in the district school. Heshowed at a very early age, however, that he pos-sessed both industry and perseverance, and thelessons he learned on the farm and in the school. BYRON READ. were not forgotten in later life. On attaining hismajority, in 1866, he entered the employment ofhis brother, Henry Read, Jr , who was engaged atthat time in the undertaking, furniture and small-hardware business in the village of Anthony. Hecontinued in this relation until 1872, at which timehe bought a half interest in the business, and thefirm name was changed to H. Read, Jr., & Co. InMarch 1873 his brother died, and Byron at oncepurchased of the heirs their interest in the business,retaining the old firm name for seven years, when itwas changed to that of his own. The increasingtrade demanding larger quarters and better facilities,and the building and land where he was locatedbeing owned by the heirs of Isaac B.
