A child walks past the Monumento Combatentes Ultramar war memorial in Lisbon

With a history dating back to prehistoric times, Lisbon is one of Europe and the world’s oldest cities. Now the capital of Portugal, it is located on the Atlantic Coast - Europe’s only capital to be thus located -and the banks of the River Tagus. Its visually striking Monumento Combatentes Ultramar is located in Belem district, close to the Torre de Belem on the north bank of the Tagus. It is a controversial and tragic monument, commemorating many soldiers who died during the insane Overseas War of 1961 to 1974; this attempted during the era of the fascist dictator Salazar to reclaim lost colonies in Africa. Its central flame, always guarded by soldiers, burns continuously, whilst the rear wall is etched with the names of the fallen.
