Aortic aneurysm. Coloured angio computed tomography (CT) scan of a frontal view of an aneurysm (upper centre) in the abdominal aorta (orange). Angio CT uses a radio-opaque contrast medium to make the blood vessels visible to X- rays. An aneurysm is an abnormal blood-filled dilation in an artery, caused by weakening of the arterial wall. The abdominal aorta supplies the abdominal organs with blood. This image shows the area beneath the kidneys (not seen). At this point the abdominal aorta divides to form the left and right iliac arteries (lower centre), which supply blood to the legs. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is usually repaired surgically.
