This may be lookedupon as the typical wrist, but it is almost alwaysmuch modified in various animals by the fusiontogether of one or more of these bones in variousways. A similar arrangement maybe looked upon as typicalin the foot also, but here the arrangement is even moredisturbed than in the hand or fore-foot (Fig. 87). In most animals the hind legs are merely wanted forsteady progression and support, and the flat bones, orilia, of the pelvic girdle are usually firmly and closelyunited to the vertebral column.
