With the develop-ment of her commerce she had regainedsomething of her earlier generations the residence of the Counts of Holland, Leyden was,and is to this day, the seat of the Rynland, a species of syndicate,formed for the control and regulation of the waters, in the heart ofthe land most exposed to their ravages.
