Rain radar. Exterior of the hydro-meteorological radar in Burgundy (Bourgogne), France. This device is operated by Meteo-France, the French national meteorological service. It is situated on top of a 20-metre-tall tower and consists of a rotatable parabolic antenna, sheltered under a dome (white, sphere), which emits a beam of electromagnetic waves that are reflected by raindrops. Analysis of these reflections allows the location and intensity of the rainfall to be determined. The radar is capable of detecting rainfall within a 150-200 km radius, an area of 30,000 square kilometres. It is useful for warning of dangerous levels of precipitation and for issuing flood warnings if necessary.
