To a child itshould be given in doses of one to three grains twice a day; to anadult in doses of three to five grains with the same frequency, and 424 GENERAL DISEASES. to both on the third day of treatment a dose of castor oil shouldbe given. The tape worm remedies have very little effect uponround worms. As preventive measures, use care as to cleanlinessof the hands and fingernails, partake only of well cooked food orfruits that have been well cleansed, and water that has been boiledor properly filtered, unless certain of its THREAD WORMS. The thread worm, known also as the pin worm, seatworm and maw worm, is slender, a half inch or less in length,of a silvery white color, and one of the most common intesti-nal parasites the world over. It is mostoften found in children and the uncleanly,but may occur in adults and in all classesof people. It infests the upper end of thelarge intestine, the cecum, in great numbers,but is sometimes also found in the smallintestine. The females descend to the rec- turn and deposit there an immense num- ber of eggs, which, having reached the ground withthe feces, and dried, are carried far and near by windsand other agencies. Some of these upon uncookedfood, as vegetables and fruits, and in other ways,™ged. are taken into the stomach, whence, having size. quickened by the digestive fluids, they pass into
