Neuropathic foot. Deformity of a patient's foot and ankle due to neuropathy - nerve damage caused by disease. Neuropathic deformity is caused by a series of injuries that pass unnoticed because of loss of sensation in the affected joint. Without sensation of pain, abnormal stress and strain on the joint fail the stimulate the protective reflex spasm of surrounding muscles, allowing exaggerated movements that can damage the joint. Recurrent damage can lead to osteoarthritis, swelling and deformity. Causes of neuropathy include diabetes, syphilis, malnutrition and excessive alcohol consumption. The nerve damage is irreversible. This patient had received previous surgery.
