Lancefield receiving T. Duckett Jones Memorial Award, 1960. At centre is US microbiologist Rebecca Price Craighill Lancefield (1895-1981), receiving the third T. Duckett Jones Memorial Award. This award was established by the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation in memory of US physician T. Duckett Jones (1899-1954). The award to Lancefield was made for her work on haemolytic streptococci. She worked at the Rockefeller Institute, and in 1970 was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for her pioneering work on streptococci and their relation to rheumatic fever. At left, from Harvard University, is US physician Walter Bauer (1898-1963), Chairman of the Whitney Foundation's Scientific Advisory Committee. At right, from the Rockefeller Institute, is US geneticist Macyln McCarty (1911-2005). Photographed on 9 October 1960 by Alan W. Richards, at the Princeton Inn, Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
