A good place to see the giant trees of the Pacific north temperate rain forest is Cathedral Grove in McMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver, Island. This is one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island – some more than 800 years old and up to 9 meters (30 ft) in circumference. The park is named after the forester MacMillan, who donated 136 hectares of land containing Cathedral Grove for a park in 1944 to protect an internationally significant example of Douglas fir old-growth forest.
