Pathogenesis and Etiology.—Variousviews have been advanced as to the natureof achondroplasia. Some believe in a hereditary degenerativestate of the cartilages. According to othersa toxic material influences in some mannerthe nervous system, which in its turn pro-duces trophic disturbances of the the ductless glands are the sourceof the toxic material. The striking featureis the nodes of fat distributed all over the body. The deposition of fatmay be not only nodular, but also circumscribed diffuse or generalizeddiffuse. The nodular is the most common form. The extremities areparticularly involved. At first the bunches of fat are noticed in the lowerand upper extremities; the trunk is affected later, but the face, hands andfeet have been spared in all observed cases.
