RICHARD I of England (Coeur de Lion) 1157-1199: reigned from 1189. On his way back from the Third Crusade, Richard was taken prisoner by Duke Leopold of Austria whom he had offended (1192). Legend has it that Blondel, a friend of the king, went round various German castles disguised as a troubadour until he discovered Richard who sang back one of their favourite songs. England then had to raise a colossal ransome to free their king. Illustration by Thomas Heath Robinson
