Synapse. Computer artwork of a synapse, the junction between two nerve cells. Synapses transmit electrical signals from one nerve cell to the next via chemicals called neurotransmitters (yellow spheres). Once the impulse has been transmitted the neurotransmitters are returned to the presynaptic nerve cell (top) and recycled.
