22/01/13 Mark Procter (orange helmet) and David Pendlebury were the first pair to make the climb today. After many days below zero a giant waterfall has now frozen solid attracting climbers to tackle the huge 30 metre ascent up the freshly formed icicles and towers of ice. Known as Kinder Downfall the waterfall is the tallest in the Peak District. The river Kinder cascades over the top of the Kinder Scout plateau near the Pennine Way 2,087 ft above sea level mid-way between the villages of Hayfield and Edale in the High Peak of Derbyshire. Finding out when the waterfall is ready to climb is shrouded in secrecy. One of the six climbers who scaled the frozen spectacle today said: "There's lots of misinformation on the internet, everyone wants to be the first to climb it as soon as it's in condition to climb". The climb up to the face of the waterfall took many hours today with climbers trudging through waist-deep snow-drifts before strapping on their crampons and using ice axes to scale the Downfall.
