Comet Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter collision. Soft ultraviolet image (4100 Angstroms) taken by the Hubble Space Telescope shortly after the first fragment of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, fragment A, collided with Jupiter. The collision occurred on July 16, 1994, at about 10:00 GMT and this image was taken hours after the impact. The impact site is visible as a dark streak, several thousand kilometres in size, in the lower left part of Jupiter's disc. The dark features may be the result of particles from the comet or possibly materials brought up from Jupiter's deep atmosphere.
